About

Andreu Simón Aymerich is a Catalan trail runner from Sant Vicenç dels Horts who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 17 after abandoning his ambition to become a firefighter, and who has since made the management of blood glucose across extreme endurance efforts both his defining challenge and his most powerful form of public advocacy. He played football until his diagnosis in 2009, turned to mountain running, and began competing seriously in 2018, winning the Spanish Ultra Championship and the Spanish Cup of Line Races in the same year. A four-time Spanish national trail champion (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022) and BUFF ambassador since 2018, he won the Transgrancanaria Classic 128k in 2023 and the KAI70k at Mt. FUJI100 in 2024. He has written the book The Sugar Marathon — documenting how he learned to prevent hypos and hyperglycaemia during mountain ultra distances — and works as a sports technician at a local city council, living proof of what a Type 1 diabetic athlete can achieve at the elite level.
