About
Charles-André Fontaine is a French ultrarunner best known for winning the 13th edition of La Diagonale des Fous (Grand Raid de la Réunion) in 2005, crossing the line in 19:49:36 after the brutal 166km, 10,000m-plus-of-gain traverse of Réunion Island from Saint-Philippe to Saint-Denis. A long-time fixture of the race, he finished 3rd overall in 2002 and was runner-up contender in the mid-2000s before taking the title outright, part of a generation of French mainland ('metropolitan') runners who began challenging Réunion's home-grown specialists on their own terrain. Now competing in the 60-64 age category, he has logged 32 finishes across his career with 2 top-10 results, remaining an active presence in French ultra-trail racing decades after his Diagonale des Fous victory.
