About

Dave Carver is an American ultrarunner who holds a place in trail running history as one of the original participants at the very first Big's Backyard Ultra in October 2011 — the last-man-standing format race devised by Gary Laz Cantrell in his backyard in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, in which runners complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour until only one remains standing. Carver finished 2nd at that inaugural 32-person edition, completing 17 loops (70.83 miles) before ceding to winner Tim Englund, who lasted one loop longer. The format that Carver helped inaugurate went on to become one of ultrarunning's most beloved and globally replicated competitions, with the annual Big's Backyard Ultra now drawing hundreds of worldwide qualifiers and a dedicated World Team Championship.
