About
Joe Kulak is an American ultrarunner from Colorado who stands as one of the most prolific and accomplished 100-mile racers of the early 2000s, his name permanently attached to one of the sport's landmark feats of volume and endurance. In 2003, he completed six 100-mile trail races between June and September — among them the full Grand Slam of Ultrarunning (Western States 100, Vermont 100, Leadville Trail 100, and Wasatch Front 100) as well as Old Dominion 100 in Virginia and Angeles Crest 100 in California, all as part of the Last Great Race challenge. He finished all six and set a new Last Great Race record, while his combined Grand Slam time of 75:07:00 smashed Ian Torrence's previous best by more than three hours. Individual victories that summer included Old Dominion 100 and Vermont 100. For his extraordinary season, Kulak received the USATF Mountain/Ultra/Trail Ted Corbitt Award as Male Ultrarunner of the Year and was named Male Trail Runner of the Year by Trail Runner magazine. With 57 documented results in the UltraRunning Magazine Calendar database, he stands as one of the most consistently competitive 100-mile runners of his generation.
