Born November 10, 1971 in Petén, Guatemala, Juan Carlos Ságastume is one of Central America's most decorated extreme-endurance athletes, with 15 international ultra-distance podiums, including 10 outright wins, across a career built on some of the hardest races on the planet — the Marathon des Sables, the Yukon Arctic Ultra, and the Leadville Trail 100, where he reached the podium in the 160-kilometre race in 2015 in 18:29:27. His endurance résumé extends well beyond footraces: he became the first Latin American to row across the Atlantic Ocean and the first person in the world to cross Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni salt flat without stopping. Also a businessman and motivational speaker, Ságastume remains one of Guatemala's leading endurance-sport ambassadors.
