Kathrin Zbinden is a Swiss ultra-trail runner born in 1967 from Thierachern in canton Bern who claimed a podium at the very first edition of the Eiger Ultra Trail in 2013 — now one of the most celebrated mountain ultras in the UTMB World Series calendar. Running the 101km course with 6,700 metres of elevation gain through the Bernese Oberland beneath the North Face of the Eiger, she finished 2nd among women in 17:06:37 behind Italian specialist Francesca Canepa (16:18:45), with Swiss runner Helene Ogi behind her in 3rd. The inaugural Eiger Ultra Trail brought together some of the strongest mountain runners in Europe; Zbinden's runner-up finish in that founding edition remains one of the defining results of her trail running career.
