Ligia Madrigal Moya is a Costa Rican ultrarunner widely regarded as the country's most accomplished endurance athlete, and the first Costa Rican woman to complete a 100-mile race. A former national adventure-racing champion for three years who represented Costa Rica at Adventure World Cup events in Brazil, Portugal, and Costa Rica, she transitioned to elite trail ultrarunning and became the first Central American to finish the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, completing the 167.7km race in 2013. Her podium résumé includes a win at Guatemala's UTG 100K in 2019 (20:24:41) and a 3rd-place finish in the 240-mile Moab 240 in 2018 (80:48:01). She has also completed the 356km Tor des Géants in Italy and multiple editions of Guatemala's UTG 100K, along with numerous victories on home soil at races including the Moonrun, Q50, and Desafío del Valle Central. Beyond racing, Madrigal set a personal landmark by running unsupported from sea level at Dominical beach to the 3,820-meter summit of Cerro Chirripó, Costa Rica's highest peak — a 77.92km effort with 5,450m of vertical gain completed in 15:29:56 — and has completed nine editions of the Chirripó mountain race.
