About
Marge Hickman is an American ultrarunning pioneer who grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before moving to Denver, Colorado in 1972. She began running in June 1978, and after meeting Jim Butera — who sold her her first pair of trail shoes — she moved into ultradistance racing in the early 1980s and became one of the top women in the sport by the mid-1980s. In 1985 she ran the Leadville Trail 100 in 26:57:50, finishing 11th overall, nearly three hours ahead of the next woman. She went on to complete the Leadville Trail 100 fourteen times within the cutoff, the most all-time by any woman, and in 1989 she completed the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning — finishing the Western States, Vermont, Leadville, and Wasatch Front 100-milers all within ten weeks — becoming one of the first 59 women in history to do so. She continued competing into her seventies.
