Mark Richtman

Mark Richtman was a fixture of Northern California ultrarunning for more than three decades, racing for the Tamalpa Runners club in Marin County and widely regarded as one of the greatest age-group ultrarunners the sport has produced. A 16-time finisher of the Way Too Cool 50K, he won it outright in 1998, and at the Miwok 100K he ran a runner-up 8:47 in 2002 — just three minutes behind Scott Jurek — before setting age-group course records there at 50 (8:45 in 2005) and 60 (10:10 in 2015) that still stand today. Still producing times competitive with open-class runners into his sixties, he was known equally for his volunteer work, spending more hours at the Western States 100's Ruck-A-Chuck river-crossing aid station than he ever did racing the event itself, and for coaching the Marin Catholic High School running program. Richtman died on May 29, 2019, at age 64, after his kayak was lost on Tomales Bay.
