Matthew Healy is a professional ultra-trail runner from Cape Town, South Africa, who made an unlikely late switch from rugby -- he was a scrum-half in the Sharks Academy system -- to distance running, shedding 15kg and remaking himself as one of the fastest-rising trail athletes on the continent. He surfaced on the elite scene in 2019 and has landed on the podium in nearly every race he has entered since, becoming a mainstay of the ASICS-sponsored South African circuit. His breakthrough results include winning the Addo Elephant Ultra-trail 76km before returning to smash the course record at the Addo 100 Mile, and a 2nd-place finish at Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB in France, beaten by just 53 seconds over 109km. He has since carried that form onto the UTMB World Series' global stage, taking 3rd at the Tarawera Ultra-Trail by UTMB in New Zealand and 3rd at the Ultra-Trail Cape Town 100k on home soil in 2025.
