About
Michael Arnstein, widely known as "The Fruitarian," is an American ultrarunner and entrepreneur from New York City who is among the most recognizable figures at the intersection of elite ultra performance and raw plant-based nutrition. The founder of The Natural Sapphire Company jewelry business and the Woodstock Fruit Festival, he switched to a nearly all-raw-fruit diet in 2008 for performance reasons, fuelling training weeks of over 200 miles on 4,000–6,000 calories of fruit and raw vegetables per day. In a remarkable five-month stretch in 2012 he finished 16th at Badwater 135, 13th at the Vermont 100, fourth at the Leadville Trail 100, completed the 246km Spartathlon, and won the Javelina Jundred 100-mile outright. His 100-mile personal best of 12:57:45 — recorded at the Desert Solstice Invitational — ranks among the fastest ever run by a North American, and he has run marathons in 2:28 at both Boston and New York.
