About

Rick Trujillo is an American mountain runner from Ouray, Colorado, born March 13, 1948, in nearby Montrose and raised in Ouray from early childhood. In the 1970s he won the Pikes Peak Marathon five times and held the race's course record from 1973 to 1982, running his fastest time of 3:46:21 (with a 2:20:33 ascent) in 1977. After running over Imogene Pass from Ouray to Telluride as a training exercise, he helped found the Imogene Pass Run, which he continued to organize and compete in, holding its course record from 1974 to 1985. In 1992 he joined fellow mountain runners Gordon Hardman, Charlie Thorn, and John Cappis to scout and measure the course for a new 100-mile race through the San Juan Mountains, helping found the Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run, which he went on to win outright in 1996. In 1995, at age 47, he set the speed record for climbing all 54 of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks in 15 days, 9 hours, 55 minutes, together with Ricky Denesik. He organized and oversaw Hardrock's volunteer trail work across the entire course for nine years, from 2010 to 2018, and was inducted into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame in 2014.
