Rudy Afanador is an American ultrarunner from New York best known for his repeat starts at the Badwater Ultramarathon across Death Valley. He was runner-up in his 2001 Badwater debut and returned as a top contender in 2003, running with the lead pack before dropping out in extreme heat. In 2004 he overcame severe dehydration and cramping at Stovepipe Wells — receiving medical treatment and a five-hour recovery break — to resume racing and finish in the top ten in 37:07, a comeback he credited to his crew and the race's medical staff. He trained for that race by mapping and completing a 150-mile training run near his home in New York.
