About
Sange Sherpa is a Nepali ultrarunner born in 1981 in Taplejung, in the high mountains of eastern Nepal's Koshi Province. Originally from the Solukhumbu region — the ancestral homeland of the Sherpa people and the gateway to Everest — he worked as a trekking guide to fund his education before relocating to France, where he discovered trail running and built one of the most prolific international racing careers the sport has seen. Based in the Jura Mountains and competing under the Kailas team banner, he races across Europe and Asia with a programme spanning mountain ultras, jungle trails, and Himalayan stage races. His most prominent wins include four victories at the Everest Trail Race by TUGA (2017, 2019, 2023, 2024); multiple wins at the Amazean Jungle Thailand by UTMB, including a 2023 result of 25:03:28 — over an hour clear of the next finisher; victory at the Rinjani100 162km in 2025 in 41:04:32; and the Royal Penguin Ultra Marathon in 2016. Sherpa's philosophy prioritises frequent racing and a genuine love for the sport over complex periodisation, and he carries a UTMB Index above 830 — placing him among the world's elite ultra-trail athletes. His journey from mountain guide in the Himalayas to elite racer across four continents is one of the most distinctive stories in modern trail running.
