About
Sarah Morwood is a British ultrarunner and acute medical doctor — she trained at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust — who combined elite trail running with a career in medicine across more than a decade. She represented Great Britain at the World Trail Running Championships in 2015, covering 50 miles over mountains in the Alps, and was selected to represent GB again in 2018. Her trail racing career was interrupted by a serious car accident in 2018 that broke her back and required spinal surgery, ruling out the steep technical descents that define mountain trail racing. Rather than stepping away from the sport, Morwood adapted, transitioning to 24-hour ultra format, where sustained flat-to-rolling effort suits her recovering spine better than aggressive downhills. She returned to competition at an elite level, running 186km (115 miles) as part of a women's team that finished fifth overall in a 24-hour event in France. Her shift from two-time World Trail Championships representative to 24-hour specialist — driven by resilience rather than choice — is a notable chapter in British ultrarunning.
