About
Sophie Power is a British ultrarunner, entrepreneur, and women's-sport advocate from London who came to the discipline with almost no athletic background — by her own account she finished second-to-last in her school mile race — before signing up for the Marathon des Sables on a whim, having never run further than a mile at the time. She has since finished more than 50 ultramarathons, including Spartathlon (153 miles, Athens to Sparta), the Spine Race Fusion (268 miles non-stop across England's Pennine Way), and multiple finishes at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), and has represented Great Britain at the 24-Hour World Championships. She became a global name in the sport in 2018 when a photograph of her breastfeeding her three-month-old son partway through UTMB's roughly 106-mile course went viral, drawing widespread attention to the lack of maternity accommodations in elite trail racing; she finished that race in 43:33. Having lost her own UTMB start two years earlier under a strict no-transfer pregnancy policy, she went on to found SheRACES, a campaign and now nonprofit pushing race organisers to offer deferred entries and better support for pregnant and postpartum athletes. Now a mother of three, she continues to race at the highest level of multi-day and mountain ultra events while writing and speaking openly about postnatal return-to-sport.
