About

Stephan Hugenschmidt is a German trail runner based in Prättigau, in the Graubünden canton of Switzerland, who has established himself as one of the Alpine region's most consistent mountain ultra competitors. An engineer by training, he came to trail running while living in the Swiss Alps and developed a competitive profile finely matched to the demanding terrain he trains on daily. He won the Eiger Ultra Trail in 2017 in a course record of 11:01:57 — a race covering 101 kilometres with 6,700 metres of elevation gain through the Bernese Oberland — and was voted Trail Runner of the Year for 2017. Beyond the Eiger, he has won the Sardona-Ultratrail and multiple stages of the Swiss Trail Tour, and has placed in the top ten at major international races including Transvulcania La Palma, Matterhorn Ultraks, and Swissalpine. Racing under the Salomon Deutschland banner and known for a technically precise style well-suited to the rugged, high-altitude terrain of the Eastern Alps, Hugenschmidt has competed prolifically across the European ultra circuit for more than a decade.
