About

Sumie Inagaki (born April 6, 1966) is a Japanese ultrarunner from Hokkaido who became one of the most decorated women's ultrarunners of the 2000s and early 2010s. She began running in 1994 at age 28, invited to the Honolulu Marathon by a colleague, and progressed from road running to the highest level of ultra distance within a decade. In 2005 she completed 137 miles at the San Diego One Day 24-hour race, outrunning endurance icon David Goggins — who covered 101 miles — in what became one of the sport's most celebrated historical moments. She won the IAU 24-hour World Championship twice (2004 and 2006), the Spartathlon twice (2006 and 2009), and the Badwater 135 twice (2011 and 2012), and holds the women's world records in the 24-hour indoor run (240.631 km, Espoo 2011) and the 48-hour track run (397.103 km, Surgères 2010). An aerobics and yoga instructor, Inagaki competed into her 50s and accumulated 156 ultramarathon finishes across a career spanning three decades.
