About
Tracy Garneau is a Canadian ultrarunner from Vernon, British Columbia, who in 2010 became the first Canadian woman to win the Western States 100 and was named North American Female Ultrarunner of the Year by UltraRunning Magazine. She began running at age eleven in Vernon, on the trails and roads of the Okanagan region, and completed several marathons before discovering ultra-distance racing in 2004 through the Canadian Death Race, a 125km multi-stage wilderness event through the Grande Cache backcountry of Alberta. She built her competitive career from the Pacific Northwest and Alberta trail running communities, developing formidable capability across 50-mile and 100-mile distances. In 2010 she produced her career-defining season: she won four separate 50-mile races, set a course record at the HURT 100 Mile in Hawaii with a time of 24:06:00 — breaking the previous women's record by two hours and placing third overall — and qualified for Western States via a victory at the American River 50 Mile. At Western States that June she ran 19:01:55, making her decisive move at the 80-mile mark to win the women's race from behind. Earlier in her career she had won team gold at the 2008 Transalpine-Run through the Alps as part of the Canadian national team. She later settled in Jasper, Alberta, where she remained part of the mountain running community.
