Aurélien Sanchez is a French ultrarunner and backpacker from Toulouse who in 2023 became the first Frenchman and 16th person ever to complete the Barkley Marathons — on his very first attempt. His winning time of 58:23:12 edged out John Kelly by just 19 minutes in the most competitive year in the race's history. He prepared by studying previous finishers' experiences and fuelled his record attempt on cheeseburgers and a power nap. A holder of the self-supported FKT on the John Muir Trail (213 miles through the Sierra Nevada), Sanchez arrived at Barkley largely unknown internationally, making his victory one of the sport's most stunning upsets.
