About

Cecilia Flori is an Italian-born theoretical physicist specializing in quantum gravity who took up running in her thirties while living in New Zealand and rapidly became one of the sport's most compelling breakout stories. Born in Ostia in 1980, she had only been running competitively for about two and a half years when she stunned the ultra-trail world by finishing 3rd at the 2017 Tarawera Ultramarathon, running shoulder-to-shoulder with two-time Western States champion Magda Boulet for much of the race. She backed up that result with a 5th-place finish at the Western States 100 in 19:44 and a 10th-place finish at the CCC (101km) in the French Alps, establishing herself as a genuine international contender within a remarkably short competitive window. Her unusual path — a career in academic physics combined with a late and rapid rise to the sport's elite level — has made her one of trail running's most distinctive profiles.
