About
Christopher Bergland is an American ultra-endurance athlete, author, and mental-health advocate from New York City. A three-time champion of the Triple Ironman — the longest recognized non-stop triathlon, comprising a 336-mile bike leg, 7.2-mile swim, and 78.6-mile run — he set a Triple Ironman world best of 38 hours 46 minutes. At the 2003 Kiehl's Badwater Ultramarathon he led the field for over 21 hours through 133°F heat before fatigue forced him to slow to a walk; he still finished 4th overall in 33:58:37. On April 30, 2004 he set the world record for the longest distance run on a treadmill in 24 hours, covering 153.76 miles (247.45 km). He later shifted from competition to writing, publishing "The Athlete's Way: Sweat and the Biology of Bliss" (2007) and becoming a long-running Psychology Today blogger on exercise and neuroscience.
