About
American ultrarunner from Lynchburg, Virginia, nicknamed the "professor of ultrarunning" for his years teaching at Liberty University. He took up ultrarunning after running his first ultra at the JFK 50 Mile, and in 1991 set a supported Fastest Known Time for the Appalachian Trail (2,144 miles), finishing in 52 days, 9 hours, 41 minutes — about ten days faster than the prior record. In 2001 he became the second person ever to finish the Barkley Marathons, completing the notoriously brutal 100-mile course in 58:21:00. Over his career he finished more than 160 ultramarathons and won at least 40 of them, and at various points held Fastest Known Times on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Vermont's Long Trail.
