Doug Moore is a New Zealand ultrarunner from Gisborne who epitomises the sport's amateur heart — working 45-50 hours a week as a builder while competing at a level that belies his non-professional status. His defining result came at the 2021 Tarawera Ultramarathon by UTMB, where he placed 2nd in the 100-mile race (19:11:33) behind American winner Matthew Urbanski, at New Zealand's premier trail running event through the geothermal forests and landscapes around Rotorua on the North Island. Moore has completed Tarawera nine times, returning year after year as a quiet constant of the country's most prestigious trail ultra, and speaks of the race with genuine devotion.
