Run through the San Juan Mountains via Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, and Lake City, Colorado, with more than 33,000 feet of climbing at an average elevation above 11,000 feet, Hardrock was in 1998 still a small, lottery-limited race in just its seventh year, and MacLean's victory places her among the handful of women's champions from that formative 1990s era.
