About

Franca Fiacconi is an Italian road marathoner from Rome who, after finishing second at the New York City Marathon in 1996 and third in 1997, completed the set by winning outright in 1998 in 2:25:17 — a time that made her the third-fastest female marathoner in Italian history. Nicknamed 'the Queen of Rome and New York,' she built her career around the Turin Marathon, which she won in both 1996 and 1998 en route to two Italian national titles, and later added victories at the Prague Marathon (1999) and Enschede Marathon (2001). Internationally she placed 13th in the marathon at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics, 4th at the 1998 European Championships, and won silver at the 1993 Summer Universiade in Buffalo. Across her career she won four international marathons outright and finished on the podium in four others, establishing her among the most consistent Italian distance runners of the late-1990s road-racing era.
