About
George Murray is a New Zealand trail runner from Blenheim on the South Island who came to elite ultra running along an unconventional path — mountain biking, road marathons, and a fly-in/fly-out mining schedule that confined his training to intense blocks before turning to mountain trails. That unorthodox regime produced one of the most emphatic debut wins on the UTMB World Series circuit when Murray crossed the Ultra-Trail Australia 100K finish line in 9:32:59 in May 2023, nearly twelve minutes clear of his nearest rival on only his third attempt at the distance, having previously won the 2022 Cairns Port Douglas Trail Ultra 50K. The self-described weekend warrior spoke about his journey from obscurity to podium on Dirt Church Radio, describing the mental clarity that long weeks in the hills of Marlborough had given him. He returned to defend at UTA in 2025, finishing fifth as the field caught up with his breakthrough result, and continues to develop as one of Oceania's most promising ultra runners.
