Ihor Verys is a Ukrainian-Canadian ultrarunner who grew up in Chornomorsk on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine and moved to Chilliwack, British Columbia at 21 to pursue graduate studies. Introduced to trail running by his neighbour Gary Robbins — one of the Barkley Marathons' most celebrated competitors — he made his 100km debut at the Finlayson Arm race in 2021 and improved at a startling pace. In January 2024 he won the HURT 100 in Hawaii, then in March became the first Canadian in history to complete the Barkley Marathons, finishing in 58:44:59 on his very first attempt — the third sub-59-hour finish in the event's 38-year history. Named #10 in the 2024 Worldwide UltraRunner of the Year standings, Verys is known for meticulous preparation and a calm, analytical racing mindset that belies how recently he discovered the sport.
