About
Jared Hazen is an American ultrarunner from Titusville, Pennsylvania, who exchanged a planned college career for a move to Teton National Park, taking a job as a housekeeper and beginning to run enormous distances through the Wyoming mountains. A high school cross-country and track athlete with a 3,200m best of 9:42, he made his Western States 100 debut at just 19 — the youngest competitor in the race — finishing 14th in 17:30. He returned in 2015 to claim third in 15:37, and at the 2019 edition ran 14:26:46 for second place, one of the fastest times ever recorded over the course. A member of the Coconino Cowboys who trains in and around Flagstaff, Arizona, alongside Jim Walmsley, Hazen is notable for preferring to race without a pacer — an unusual choice at Western States that has consistently served him well. His willingness to race aggressively from the front, regardless of conditions or competition, has made him one of the most exciting athletes in American ultrarunning.
