About
Known on the trails as 'Lakewood,' John Fegyveresi leads a double life as an elite ultrarunner and a working glaciologist. He holds a PhD in Geosciences from Penn State (2015) and has researched polar ice cores at the U.S. Army's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, now serving as Associate Professor at Northern Arizona University's School of Earth and Sustainability. In April 2012, on his first attempt, he became just the 12th person ever to finish the notoriously brutal Barkley Marathons, touching the yellow gate in 59:41:21 — a feat later chronicled in the documentary 'The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young' and one he has called one of the proudest moments of his endurance career. A prolific racer with well over a hundred recorded ultra finishes, he shares his running and science life through his 'Treks to Nowhere' podcast and book project.
