About
Karl Meltzer, nicknamed "Speedgoat," is an American ultrarunner widely regarded as the winningest 100-mile racer in history, with 38 hundred-mile victories as of 2024 — including the Hardrock 100 five times and the Wasatch Front 100 six times. Born in Philadelphia and raised in New Hampshire, he moved to Utah in 1989 chasing a ski-bum lifestyle and instead found trail running, turning professional in 1999 after his first ultra in 1996. He was named UltraRunning Magazine's 2006 North American Ultrarunner of the Year and in 2016 set the men's supported fastest known time on the 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail. Meltzer became Hoka One One's first sponsored athlete around 2010 after trying an early prototype from co-founder Nico Mermoud, and the relationship produced his namesake Hoka Speedgoat shoe line (launched 2015) and the Speedgoat 50K race he founded in 2007 and later sold to World Triathlon Corporation in 2021.
