Kazuko Kaihata is a Japanese ultrarunner associated with the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, the endurance-sport organisation known for pairing extreme distance running with spiritual practice. She took part in an international transcontinental relay run that began in London on January 1st, crossing Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland before reaching Moscow, running alongside teammates including Jasper Kenn Olsen of Denmark and Alexander Korotkov of Russia at a pace of roughly 60 kilometers a day. From Moscow the group continued across the length of Russia toward Vladivostok on the Pacific coast — a route Kaihata had specifically prepared for by studying extensively about Russian history and geography, fulfilling what she described as her long-cherished dream of running across Siberia.
