About
Kirk Apt is an American ultrarunner from Fruita, Colorado, and a bodywork therapist specializing in Rolf Structural Integration and myofascial massage, who stands as the most prolific finisher in the history of the Hardrock 100. He debuted at the race in 1993 with a fourth-place finish, and by 2000 had progressed to win it outright in 29:35, a course record at the time. Since then he has returned to Silverton nearly every summer, crossing the finish line and kissing the race's iconic painted rock a record 24 times — an unmatched streak built on a famously low-key, unhurried running style that lets him 'take what the course gives him.' Known throughout the ultrarunning community for his generosity on course, including offering fellow strugglers simple remedies like ginger for nausea, Apt has become as celebrated for his mentorship and calm philosophy as for his results, reflecting in later years on finding joy in the trees, clouds, and peaks as his competitive edge has softened with age.
