Lorie Hutchison is an American ultrarunner and Life Flight nurse from Salt Lake City, Utah, who built one of the more durable desert-ultra résumés of the 2000s while working full-time in emergency medicine. She finished the Badwater 135 twice, improving from 8th overall in her 2008 debut to 3rd woman in 2009 in 30:23:48, racing through 120-plus-degree heat across Death Valley on a liquids-and-electrolytes-only fueling strategy — roughly 32 ounces of fluid and 100 calories of Hammer Nutrition product every hour, with no solid food. By the time of her second Badwater finish she had completed ten 100-plus-mile ultramarathons and ten 50-milers, frequently placing in the top five. She went on to run 446 miles across Utah in 2009 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation and later pursued a master's degree to become a physician's assistant.
