Mark McDermott is a British ultrarunner who authored one of Hardrock 100's most famous finishes: at the 1997 race he crossed the line hand-in-hand with fellow Briton Mark Hartell in a dead-heat tie, both men clocking 30:33:31 to beat the field's best American runners that year. Hartell later said he could have finished faster but chose to stay with McDermott to encourage him to the shared win — the race's first tie, one that stood alone until Kilian Jornet and Jason Schlarb tied again in 2016.
