Meredith Dolhare is an American ultra-endurance athlete from Charlotte, North Carolina, who came to the sport after a college tennis career at Vanderbilt, where she helped lift the Commodores from a mid-70s national ranking into the top ten. After graduating in 1996 she moved through marathons and a dozen Ironman triathlons before turning to the sport's most extreme distances, finishing 3rd at the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon in 2013 -- a race that climbs from Death Valley, 279 feet below sea level, to the Mount Whitney trailhead at 8,360 feet in temperatures over 120°F. Four months later she became just the sixth woman to complete the Death Valley Cup, pairing that Badwater finish with the 508-mile Furnace Creek bicycle race. Dolhare has also finished on the podium of the Powerman Zofingen Duathlon World Championship and the Ultraman United Kingdom. In 2012 she founded RunningWorks, a Charlotte nonprofit that uses running and fitness to help homeless men and women build the discipline, mental health support, and structure to secure stable employment and housing.
