About
Mike Wolfe is an American ultrarunner from Bozeman and Missoula, Montana, who became one of the most versatile and competitive mountain ultra performers in the United States in the early 2010s. Growing up in Bozeman surrounded by the mountains of Big Sky Country, Wolfe came to running through the Bridger Ridge Run — a 20-mile mountain race above Bozeman that he ran at age 18 and immediately found to suit his nature. He graduated from The College of Idaho with a political science degree and worked briefly as an assistant United States Attorney in Helena, Montana, before making a decisive career change in 2011: he resigned his legal position and moved to Missoula to train full-time as a professional runner under The North Face sponsorship. That year he placed second at the Western States 100 in 15:38:29 behind Kilian Jornet, finished in the top three at UTMB Mont-Blanc, won the North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championship in a course record time, and was ranked second in UltraRunning Magazine's men's runner of the year standings. A composed and technically skilled competitor who excelled on high-altitude mountain terrain, Wolfe held multiple course records across major American mountain ultra events. After his competitive peak he transitioned to coaching in Bozeman, bringing the same measured intelligence and mountain sensibility to his coaching that had defined his racing career.
