About
Ruby Muir is a New Zealand ultra-endurance runner born on 1 July 1991 who grew up in Whenaukite on the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island and entered her first endurance event — a Goat Adventure Run on Mount Ruapehu — in 2009, winning it without prior preparation. The apparent ease of that debut belied what followed: a career defined by near-total dominance over the mountain trail events of New Zealand, headlined by a record seven victories at the Kepler Challenge 60km — the country's most prestigious trail race. She is also a two-time winner of the Tarawera Ultramarathon (2013 and 2015) and won The Otter African Trail Run in South Africa in 2013, demonstrating that her ability translated beyond the New Zealand calendar. Running offered both a sport and an emotional anchor after the early death of her father, and she has spoken candidly about how movement through mountains helped carry her through grief. Muir won the New Zealand cross-country championships in 2017 and ran a 16:20 road 5km personal best in 2020, illustrating an unusual range across the speed-endurance spectrum. Deliberately private and largely absent from social media, she lives in Wellington and trains with the Wellington Scottish Athletics Club.
