Sage Clifton Read Canaday is an American professional trail and ultrarunner born on November 14, 1985 in Newberg, Oregon, who came to the sport via one of the strongest road backgrounds of his generation — a full scholarship at Cornell University, a place in the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, a 2:16:52 marathon personal best, and qualification for both the 2008 and 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. He walked away from the roads in early 2012, moved to Boulder, Colorado, signed with SCOTT Sports, and won the USATF Mountain Running Championship at the Mount Washington Road Race in his first year on trails. He went on to claim three U.S. national titles — mountain running, 100K trail, and trail marathon — along with the 2014 World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship, and set course records at Speedgoat 50K and Lake Sonoma 50. Known for his analytical approach and prolific content production, he founded the YouTube channel Vo2maxProductions (247,000+ subscribers, 49M+ views as of 2024) — one of the most detailed resources for elite trail training methodology in the sport. He and his partner Sandi Nypaver co-founded Higher Running, an online coaching service. In 2021 he survived a bilateral pulmonary embolism and the loss of his Boulder home in an apartment fire; both events interrupted but did not end his competitive career.
