About
Sam Wreford is a New Zealand endurance runner from Timaru who achieved an extraordinary breadth of performance across road and trail. In 2011 he set the Tarawera Ultramarathon 100km course record with a time of 8 hours 33 minutes 50 seconds — a mark that stood for four years until Dylan Bowman broke it in 2015. On the road he ran 2:16:35 to win the Southland Marathon, the fastest certified marathon time in New Zealand in 20 years, also winning the Christchurch Marathon (2:17:30) and the New Zealand Cross Country title. Coached by Barry Magee — the New Zealand marathon legend and Rome Olympic bronze medallist — Wreford was one of the most versatile endurance athletes of his generation in New Zealand.
