About
Joaquín López is an Ecuadorian ultrarunner born and raised in the mountains of Ecuador, where his passion for nature and sport was kindled from childhood. His relationship with the high Andes began at age 11 with his first summit — Cerro Puntas — and deepened under the influence of his brother, who organises the renowned Huairasinchi adventure race. He studied marketing at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), graduating in 2015, before relocating to Spain to pursue elite trail running. In 2019 he founded Ecuadoruns — a running coaching and community platform with over 300 members in Ecuador — blending his athletic career with active development of the sport in his home country. He made history at the 2024 UTMB Mont-Blanc, finishing third in 20:26:22 to become the first Latin American ever to stand on the UTMB podium. In 2025 he followed that by winning the Mt. Fuji 100 in a course record of 17:48:40, again the first Latin American to take the top step at that race. A CTS-coached athlete and thoughtful writer on the sport, López continues to expand the reach of South American trail running at the highest level.
