Pau Capell is a Spanish ultrarunner and engineer from Sant Boi de Llobregat near Barcelona who took up running at 20 after a serious knee injury ended his football career — and reached the pinnacle of the sport in just seven years. A North Face athlete who now lives in Andorra, he won the TDS by UTMB in 2016 at only 24 years old, just four years after beginning the sport, then claimed three consecutive Transgrancanaria Classic titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019 — an unprecedented hat-trick at one of Europe's most competitive mountain ultras. His 2019 season was historic: he remained undefeated across the Ultra-Trail World Tour, claimed the overall UTWT championship for the second straight year, and capped the year with victory at UTMB Mont-Blanc in 20:19:07 — a course record and more than 45 minutes ahead of his nearest rival. He has spoken widely about how his engineering training and analytical problem-solving mindset are as important to his racing success as his physical preparation.
