About
Emma Roca Rodríguez (12 August 1973 – 18 June 2021) was a Catalan ultrarunner, ski mountaineer, firefighter, and biomechanics lecturer who earned a place among the most decorated Spanish endurance athletes of her generation. She built her competitive foundation in adventure racing — her team won the 2010 Raid World Championship — before winning the Leadville Trail 100 Mile and the Run Rabbit Run 100 Mile, and placing on the podium at UTMB (third overall), Hardrock 100 (second), and Western States 100 (fifth), a breadth of high-altitude and technical 100-mile podiums matched by very few. Alongside her racing career she completed a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 2019, studying the physiological effects of ultramarathons on everyday runners. Roca died of vulvar cancer on 18 June 2021 at the age of 47.
